Flow Consulting - a new (ad)venture!

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to my Notebook. An area dedicated to capturing thoughts, best practice, more thoughts & hopefully some helpful insights into the life of a Change Consultant.

Flow Consulting - the adventure begins!

I have spent many days & nights thinking about setting up my business.

4 years ago I wrote my first business plan & spent the following years iterating, refining, deleting & re-writing various drafts. Sharing my thoughts with a handful of people, bracing myself for the feedback & critique.

For those that know me, they know I’m an avid planner. I like to plan, a lot... considering each option, possibility, outcome & preparing for what this could mean in reality.

Earlier this year, I found the confidence to make the decision to make the change & made a start on building what is now Flow Consulting.

So, what have I learned?

Making the jump - or, more accurately making the pre-planned change - has been a significant learning curve. What it has also been is exciting. Ridiculously exciting!

Going through the process of setting up a company, I have learnt to;

  1. Surround yourself with those that support you, understand your motivation & drive

  2. Take advice from the experts - you don’t know everything & it’s okay to ask!

  3. Just start. You can plan until your blue in the face, but make the first step & start.

  4. Approach it one step at a time. I found putting a basic Trello plan in place really helped!

  5. Be curious - research ideas, explore thoughts & test these out. Trial & error, how else will you learn?

  6. Celebrate successes & be proud of yourself (something I am terrible at doing!)

You will see number one on that list is about people. I am fortunate to have a supportive network around me; mentors, past colleagues, friends & family. People that care. Without them, I wouldn’t have made the progress I have in setting up Flow, so a massive thank you, you know who you are.

What next?

It is early days & yes I do have times where this feels like a bad idea, where I should have stayed in the safety of the type of employment I know, that I should just back away from this idea & leave it until I’ve worked for at least 50 years… but these thoughts are few & far between.

On the horizon is my first contract through Flow Consulting. An opportunity to see what I’m really made of & to get stuck in with what sounds like a fantastic project!

Oh, & the small job of helping organise Christmas Tree Collections for the 3rd year in a row (more on that another time!).

I am always happy to catch up over a coffee & meet other like-minded people, so please feel free to get in touch at kimberley@flowconsulting.je
